What is School Counseling and Social Emotional Learning?
Welcome to the Neillsville Middle School Counseling page. Middle school can be a challenging and exciting time for students as they transition from children to young adults. The counseling department here at NMS is available as a resource to help you with those challenges and help to prepare you for high school.
School counseling is the process of helping students by assisting them in making decisions and changing behavior. It is designed to be a preventative activity, or intervention, which meets the immediate needs and concerns of students.
Social-Emotional learning is the process through which students learn and apply knowledge, skills and attitudes which allow them to make responsible and caring decisions.
All of these can be addressed in several different ways including:
- Classroom Lessons
- Small Group Counseling
- Individual Counseling
Classroom Lessons
Social-Emotional Lessons in the middle school classroom follow the SecondStep and BrainWise Programs.
Small Group Counseling
Group counseling assists students in addressing common needs and concerns. Students learn to identify problems, causes, alternatives and possible outcomes so appropriate action can be taken. Areas for group counseling might include:
- Social Skills
- Relationship Issues
- Academic Achievement
- Behavior Management
- Transitions
Small groups tend to be "data-driven," based on the needs of particular students in the district as identified through data analysis.
Individual Counseling
Individual counseling is provided for students expressing difficulties dealing with relationships, personal concerns, or normal developmental tasks. It assists students in identifying problems, causes, and possible consequences so that appropriate action is taken.
Some areas that may be addressed in individual counseling include topics such as:
- Problem-solving Strategies
- Interpersonal Relationships
- Educational Planning
- Career Exploration
- Conflict Resolution
- Anger Management
- Crisis Intervention
We look forward working with all of you during Guidance lessons, as well as tackling challenges that might come your way.
